Why we need to retreat….
Retreats have become the popular holiday destination for all sorts of people, but why do we need to retreat?
I have been helping out with and participating with retreats for over 20 years now and it is an integral part of my care of self and soul. I instinctively know when I need to retreat from outside influences and reconnect with myself.
I am currently writing this at one of my very favourite retreat venues Trigonos in the Nantle valley, North Wales where I also held a day retreat just over a week ago. I came back on my own for 3 days of solitude as I felt called by my inner wisdom to drop out of everyday life, habits and rituals for a while to find some solace and make new habits and rituals as the energy of the seasons is turning. It is only when I am in this place of stillness that I can really connect with that wisdom that guides me to a better life.
I liken it to having a phone or computer with all the tabs open, they start to slow down and ‘glitch’ and give way under the strain of too much. So going on a retreat is like closing down all the tabs, switching the phone or computer off, plugging back into the mains (maybe with airplane mode on) and allowing it to recalibrate.
In terms of self care we know many of the things that we are supposed to do to support of wellbeing physically and mentally, but often lack the time and space to really explore this. And sometimes we may escape from everyday life and take a Spa day or a massage, but every now and then we crave something a little bit deeper.
An organised retreat also gives the opportunity of truly being looked after by the facilitators, who will have planned everything for you, so you don’t need to think about activities or food it will all be taken care of. And if you have a wobble or feel unsure of anything they are there to support you, it can take you out of your comfort zone initially, but as soon as you land your nervous system will relax and let go.
We offer different retreats – mini ones are the first toe in the water and are usually half a day so you can see if it is for you. Full day and residential ones allow for a fuller immersive experience.
So check my events page for upcoming retreats and events and reach out if you have any questions.
